A Message from Danny Thompson
Somerset County
Economic Development Commission
Executive Director
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Somerset County
Economic Development Commission (SCEDC), it is a privilege for us
to assist the residents and businesses of Somerset County in
Economic Development.
The Somerset County Economic Development Commission was
established by resolution originated on behalf of the Somerset
County Commissioners on September 30, 1980 to encourage economic
development for positive growth as a County endeavor. The County
Commissioners wanted an organization that would assist in
addressing the issue of promoting economic development for the
betterment of all the citizens of Somerset County.
Understanding that, the Somerset County Economic Development
Commission’s goal is to increase the economic viability and
vitality of the County's business community by creating a positive
vision for economic growth. With the help of our local residents
and the business community, the SCEDC’s goals can be achieved.
Promoted through a dynamic marketing program with business
incentives, the SCEDC will help in assisting those businesses
already in Somerset County to grow and expand. This can be
achieved with the help of the various financing programs and
workforce development initiatives that are available through the
state and local resources.
Somerset County is experiencing tremendous economic growth.
However the initiatives of the SCEDC is to balance the current
growth while retaining our local heritage, preserving our
environment and maintaining our quality of life that we have grown
accustom to. Some of the major projects that the SCEDC have
focused on this past year are as follows:
· Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Westover
· Aerospace Manufacturing in the old Carvel Hall building in
Crisfield
· ODDI USA in the Spec Building in the Princess Anne Industrial
Park
· Ferry Crossing (Crisfield Maryland to Reedville Virginia)
· City of Crisfield Priority Place designation
A full list of projects can be seen on our website
www.somersetcountyedc.org in linking to our Annual Report.
Without the support from the Somerset County Commissioners, The
Town of Princess Anne, The City of Crisfield, and our Associate
Members, these projects would not have materialized.
The Somerset County EDC operates and administers their own local
revolving loan program. The Small Business Expansion Program (SBEP)
was established to assist local area businesses in the County to
retain create more jobs, and to generate a positive impact, which
would permit more interest and involvement in attracting outside
businesses to locate to the area.
Our Associate Membership Program is a vital link in our partnering
with the various agencies throughout the county in a common
endeavor to raise the standard of living and quality of life for
all of our citizens of Somerset County. By developing a concerted
effort to work in all three areas of economic development, the
Somerset County Economic Development Commission will be able to
help improve the employment, personal income, tax base, and
quality of life for all the people in Somerset County.
If you would like to support the economic development in Somerset
County as an Associate Member please inquire about our Associate
Membership program, which goes into more detail about the benefits
and goals of your membership. Should you have any questions, or
concerns about issues affecting the growth of economic development
in Somerset County, please give us a call. We would appreciate
your input.

City
of Crisfield
Progressing forward - Retaining the treasures
Being one of the fastest growing towns on the Eastern Shore, the
City of Crisfield has seen positive economic change in the past
three years. With talk of a new Ferry connecting the Eastern
and Western Shores of the Chesapeake Bay, landing in Crisfield,
and the discovery by visitors of the affordable property in a
beautiful setting changes have come to the city offering new
waterfront condominiums, restaurants, shops and a beautification
of the City and its waterfront. While the property values and
retail industry has increased, so has the cultural and
recreational amenities. Crisfield now has four museums, a
city-wide trolley for tours (seasonal), and soon will open Cedar
Island Marsh as a living museum exploring a local salt marsh and
wildlife found there.
